Troop Greeters Museum

Our History

In May of 2003 a small group of Bangor area residents began greeting military flights passing through Bangor International Airport. Over the years, this group of volunteers continued to grow in number and in 2008 became incorporated as the Maine Troop Greeters and registered as a non-profit organization. Today, this all-volunteer corps is over 600 members strong and continues with the support of local organizations and community members to greet troops, day or night, rain or shine.

Each service person, whether coming home or heading overseas, is given a warm welcome and a “thank you for your service”. The offer of a cellphone, a snack, and a handshake or a hug, let them know they are appreciated.

Since the greetings began in 2003, more than 7,305 flights with more than 1,480,033 service members and 396 military dogs have been greeted. The Greeters pledge to continue meeting incoming and outgoing flights as long as U.S. armed forces are serving overseas.
